Third time's a charm for vault champion Carey

Jade Carey struck gold at the third time of asking as she led an American one-two in the women's vault final in Liverpool.

Carey earned silvers on the apparatus at her two previous World Championships but has now claimed top prize following a score of 14.516.

It was redemption for the 22-year-old who won Olympic floor gold in Tokyo but missed out on vault.

She said: “This medal means everything to me, especially after the Olympic vault final. I’m just really proud of myself for coming back and hitting two strong vaults.

“In the Olympic final I didn’t do my first vault the way I should have done it. I ended up getting eighth, so here today, actually completing both vaults successfully, and landing both on my feet felt like an amazing feeling. I’m proud of myself for bouncing back.”

Jordan Chiles took silver in her second senior final as the top two from qualifying translated their momentum into the showpiece.

“That was amazing," said Chiles. “I’ll be looking to upgrade it in the coming seasons. I’m really excited about this being the start of something new.

France's Colline Devillard, crowned European champion on this piece in 2017, took bronze to inflate hopes for her home Olympics in 2024. 

“I wanted this world medal. I think it’ll be a good stage in what’s to come in the future. Now I’ll take some time to savour this little medal which is really welcome.”

There was another near-miss for Canada's Ellie Black, who finished fourth - just as she had on the same apparatus in 2017.

The World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022 will be one of the largest international sporting events ever to be held in the city.
