Andrade in search of history in all-around final

Samba star Rebeca Andrade heads into tonight’s all-around final as favourite for gold, poised to make sporting history for her nation.

Brazil have only ever won one medal in women’s all-around, Jade Barbosa’s share of bronze back in 2007.

Andrade has already broken new ground in Liverpool in leading the women’s team to fourth, their best-ever result at the World Championships.

She was some distance above the rest in qualification, posting an all-around score of 57.332 and leaving Jade Carey and Shilese Jones trailing in her wake.

The USA duo will hope to turn the tables on Andrade tonight and maintain the momentum from Tuesday night’s women’s team gold.

Carey and Jones were both rock solid in the team final, supported by Jordan Chiles who missed out on the all-around after a fall on beam.

Olympic floor champion Carey has flourished as an all-around performer in recent years, reaching the final in the discipline in Tokyo.

She said: "I was the anchor all last year on every event at school, and it's helped me in pressure situations.”

Ou Yushan qualified sixth for the all-around final and her beam and uneven bars strength make her a medal contender.

Ou will spearhead Chinese hopes after the withdrawal of Olympic beam silver medallist Tang Xijing. She joins Carey, Jones and Andrade in a star-studded first rotation.

Jessica Gadirova tops the bill for Britain having led the host nation to a historic team silver medal.

The teenager finished tenth in the Tokyo all-around final and will once again showcase her popular new floor routine.

Also featuring are Italy’s Martina Maggio and Alice D’Amato, Australia’s Georgia Godwin and Ellie Black, fresh from her team final feats with Canada.

The World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022 will be one of the largest international sporting events ever to be held in the city. Over 500 gymnasts from more than 70 countries will compete at the M&S Bank Arena from 29 October to 6 November 2022. Tickets are available at www.2022worldgymnastics.com/tickets.
